APARTMENT BELOW A ROOF
In 1994 the Soler brothers decide to cover with a gable roof the terrace that had caused so many leaks for them. This covered space remained uninhabited, in exposed brick, cold and naked for about fifteen years, working as a sausage drying room for their ground floor butchery they occupied.
Taking advantage of changing times they decided to convert this space to rental housing. The few existing windows had to be multiplied with skylights and mirrors, which bounced the light and views, transforming the space.
The interventions focused on two aspects. Firstly, a whitewash: insulating, folding, paving and painting to create a pure and white interior volume to begin with. Secondly a wall of fir wood that bends and deforms to distribute and articulate the various functions. Into the wall are placed wardrobes, the front door, the bowels of the kitchen, but also the bathroom and the access to the rooms. The main room remains as a unified space, creating different places with different touches: the kitchen protected below ceramic vaults from the old stairwell; the central zone arises through a subtle hydraulic carpet; the wall converted into shelves suggesting a study area.
Given the uncertainty of future inhabitants, it was decided to equip each room with a water room. Thus, not only are the bedrooms being expanded visually, but also the bathrooms, which take advantage of increased natural light and views. Finally to the south and west, a set of roller blinds provides protection from the warmth and harsh light of the Meditrranean sun.
